This article explores the creation in the 1980s in South Asia of the Subaltern studies which started as a series of publications on Indian history now has a global reach and has become a field of study close to postcolonialism. The author highlights the necessary linkages between subaltern studies and postcolonial studies but the specificity of political modernity in colonial India makes contributions which go beyond a simple application of Marxist theories to India.
