A 4-year global collaboration project

The UKRI Collective Fund award 'Gender Responsive Resilience and Intersectionality in Policy and Practice (GRRIPP) - Networking Plus Partnering for Resilience' was funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund.

It was a more than 4-year global collaboration and knowledge-exchange project, implemented by a collective of universities. It aimed to bring together theory, policy and practice to promote a gender-responsive approach to disaster management and development. It ended in April 2025.

Commissioning

A large proportion of the budget was dedicated to support projects in Africa, Latin America and Caribbean, and South Asia, responding to the needs and priorities identified in and by each region. With this, GRRIPP aimed to make knowledge produced in the Global ‘South’ more visible and support diverse initiatives to have a positive impact on local communities.

The needs of each region and the scope of funded projects was defined through a collaborative process with the Regional Networks and orientated by a gender and intersectional lens. The regional projects aimed to provide the opportunity to build capacity, connect different projects together, support early career researchers and practitioners, and give visibility to those who do not usually benefit from access to funding.

Implementation approach

GRRIPP was not only about innovative research and development initiatives, it also proposed to develop innovative methods and ways of working; GRRIPP was committed to lead the project in a feminist way, guided by a decolonial approach, by which was meant a critical reassessment of power relationships between and within countries, communities and social relations more generally. The structure of management was flat and horizontal, and all the partners were expected to follow a code of conduct that ensured a diverse, fair and safe working environment.

In this regard, GRRIPP aimed to foster an international collaboration to bring to the forefront initiatives from the Global ‘South’. With this change of focus and methods, GRRIPP contributed to renewing theory and implementing better policies and practices in the fields of gender-responsive disaster risk reduction, climate change action and development.
