The article discusses the importance of the representation of women in photo-essays post tsunami disaster. Through analysing photo-essay images published by aid agencies they paper explains that women are mainly represented as 'passive victims' if they are even represented, as compared to men who are shown as involved in disaster recovery physical labour. These visuals do not reflect the complexity of the participation of women in pre- and post-disaster planning and recovery.
