This paper explores the local conceptualisations of gender at the district and village level in Malawi and Zambia using qualitative data collected from a total of 70 key informants. The authors warn against Western framings of genders by practitioners which do not align with local realities and contexts. A masculinities lens at the local level reveal the existence of subordinate and marginalised men. The hierarchical relationships existing between men also limit women's participation.
