This article systematically scrutinises the relationship between national female leaders and their effectiveness in handling the COVID-19 crisis. Using a constructed dataset for 194 countries, the article examines differences in policy responses by male vs. female leaders and attempts to develop explanations for the differences in outcomes. The findings show that COVID-19 are systematically better in countries led by women which may be explained by the proactive and coordinated emergency management policy responses adopted by them.
